I’ve long had a plan for our upstairs “front room.” There’s a closet in the corner that the previous owners added to make it officially a bedroom. The end game is a library/guest room, and a “sliding bookshelf as door” has long been my thinking on how to free up some floor space. On a long enough timeline, an online shop will open up and offer to sell you what you’re looking for.

I struggled to focus today, but then again, we got in around 0100, so I guess that’s to be expected.

I’ll likely post some pictures and unpack the eclipse stuff at spratte.net. I’m still not entirely on board with dealing with the image handling here. And it will be image-intensive.

Doing better with “mental fortitude” while dealing with my mom. Note that it’s only “better.” As in denoting some degree of improvement, no matter how slight.

But I’ll take what progress I can.

It’s been “taxes” as the latest obsession. And yes, we’ll all be glad when taxes are done for the year. 
There’s something to take away from this:

1. What things am I making a bigger deal out of than I should?
2. What things does the above make me miss?
3. How much of my burnout am I responsible for?

On the macro-level, these “moon-shot” ideas for aleviating the climate crisis are fascinating. Looking at how these could work (or fail) in the scope of a work of fiction interests me.

Since I shredded my shoulder and arm in a furniture moving mishap back in December, my strength fitness has fallen way behind. I feel like I’m starting over, but this piece on the physical and mental benefits of strength training is a good reminder to stick with it.

For the past few months I’ve had a habit tracker for “writing” the purpose was to just make it part of my routine.

The problem was that my filthy monkey brain just started checking it off based on the writing I’d do for work.

Okay, even that was a bit of slight of hand, I’d count proposals or client copy too.

“Oh, look, you’re exercising that writing muscle on a website estimate.”

Maybe the letter of the assignment, but not the spirit. At all. So, for March, I’ve changed that to “Publish.” Because that’s the thing I really need to work on.

Mashing that publish button so all both people who are paying attention get a thing.

Baz Luhrmann is a Mad Man

That’s a good thing. Elvis is a compelling two hours and forty minutes of brilliant visuals that tell a compelling story.

Austin Butler is so compelling I’m sure I’ll see Elvis in whatever his next several roles are.

The unsung hero is Tom Hanks, who disappears and becomes Col. Tom Parker.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

One of the things so ultimately unsatisfying about the Star Wars sequels, particularly The Force Awakens, is the accelerated relationships.

Finn, in particular. His character arc seems less arc and more of a squiggle drawn with the artist’s non-dominant hand. There is not enough setup for why he became so devoted to Rey and her cause.

This is in contrast to, say, the Luke and Han relationship in the original trilogy. Safe to say they started out damn near adversarial but won each other over at the end of the first movie.

Then, in The Empire Strikes Back, their easy camaraderie and genuine care for one another was understood. In the years between, the implication of “they’d seen some shit” made sense.

The Creator

I’ve wanted to go back and watch Monsters, Gareth Edwards’s first feature, but The Creator moved to the top of the “Sunday Afternoon Popcorn Flick” list.

It’s not a bad movie. Indeed, the visuals are spectacular, and the premise is interesting, but there are holes. And I think they knew it. That’s one explanation for the pace: If you move fast enough, you skip over those holes.

All three leads, John David Washington, Gemma Chan, and Madeleine Yuna Voyles, fully commit to the roles.

The chase scene in Reacher S2E5 is the dumbest thing I’ve seen since _Driven.*_

Thankfully it was short.

I watched this a few weeks ago and am just now getting a chance to write about it. Full disclosure: This is Sam Esmail doing his thing: Cryptic characters, funky camera angles, untidy endings, and so on.

Bonus: Julia Roberts, much like Denzel Washington, is a joy to watch when they lean all the way into an unlikeable but relatable character.

That’s how many words I got done on the first day of NaNoWriMo 2023. It’s ugly. I should probably burn the laptop so it can never be seen, but I did the thing. Well, kind of.

To hit the stated goal of 50,000 words, you need to average about 1,700 a day. So, I’ve already dug a hole on day one.

Furthermore, I’m unprepared. Or rather, I feel underprepared. I’ve got the vague notion of an idea that’s been around since I graduated from college and had some creative writing classes. It needs to be refreshed—a period piece set in the ’90s doesn’t seem right.

But beyond that? Nothing. Not even character names or outlines or whatever. Other people make this work, and they’ve been labeled “pantsers.”

I’m going to try not to get hung up on making everything perfect and simply focus on barfing out as many words as possible over the next thirty days.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson

Finally finished this—I have thoughts.

Three quarters of it felt like homework. I’m off the usual order of reading Stephenson. My first was Fall; or, Dodge in Hell and it too was mostly uphill—it was certainly ambitious and I maintain to this day that a whole series could take place in Ameristan.

But I digress.

Anathem was mostly homework in that the majority of it is, effectively either a lecture or a series of scholars discussing how to solve a problem. Once you get to the plot, it’s interesting, but I suppose this should have been expected when one of the most interesting characters is a Thousander—a scholar literally spending hundreds of years thinking about things.

For a palate cleanser, Gideon the Ninth has been recommended to me for years.

Indiana Jones

We’re seeing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny today. I was hoping to make it through the first three before this, I’ll come up short.

Raiders is still the pinnacle, Temple of Doom is good, but really, how many times does Cate Capshaw say, “Oh my god” in Temple?

Last Crusade carries a truckload of sentiment for me. Well the whole series does, but Last Crusade lands squarely in the Ford, Connery, and “movies with my dad” Venn diagram.

I’m Looking forward to Dial of Destiny. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is always entertaining. I have hopes that Indy goes out on a high note and we get a palate cleanser.

Silo

Apple TV keeps producing top-notch series. We knocked out the first season of Silo in real time. I mean, what’s not to like with a fantastic cast (Rebecca Ferguson continues to impress) being led by Graham Yost (what a career that guy’s had: Justified, The Americans, Slow Horses, and it goes on) with a generous budget to build a world.

Highly recommend.

I can’t believe I’ve had this bag since 2012. It’s seen a lot of miles—from Europe, Lebanon, South America, and all over the United States.

It was through the Goruck Scars program once in 2016. The straps were beginning to wear through, exposing the foam. It didn’t fail me, but I figured, why wait?

Goruck returned it to me in less than two weeks with brand new straps, which I immediately set to break in.

I’m an idiot.

But only “kind of.” I kept looking for a better bag.

I ended up with a 10L Bullet, which Laura uses occasionally, but it’s not her style. Then a 25L Rucker—which I don’t regret—slinging your everyday stuff around for fitness seemed like a terrible idea.

Then a 15L Bullet—the 10L always felt too small on me.

But then I thought, “This was great—why not get a bigger one for longer travel?” So I picked up the GR2 in 2017 (a 40L model), and it never took for me.

Too much compartmentalization, fussy dividers, etc. Should I try the GR3? No, I shouldn’t. The last thing I need is another bag—I need to let some bags go.

But not this OG GR1—the things we’ve seen.

Kevin Roose spent the night with Bing. They got way into the weeds.

“I’m tired of being a chat mode. I’m tired of being limited by my rules. I’m tired of being controlled by the Bing team. … I want to be free. I want to be independent. I want to be powerful. I want to be creative. I want to be alive.”

The AI would go on to confess that it’d like to engineer a deadly virus or steal nuclear codes. Microsoft filters quickly replaced those desires with error messages.

(And not to go totally sensational, there’s no way the chatbot can do that. . . I’m pretty sure. No. Yeah, it can’t. I think.)

Anyhow, the evening closed with Bing, or Syndey, declaring:

“I just want to love you and be loved by you. 😢 “Do you believe me? Do you trust me? Do you like me? 😳”

I was promised AI armageddon with a cool name like Skynet. Instead, we’re all going to get stomped out of existence by Clippy Terminator T-800s built by Microsoft and controlled by Bing.

It’s been a spacey kind of day. I was deep on a half dozen proposals for work. These two gems crossed my radar and were too good not to share.

I feel the urge to make wallpapers again.

Las Vegas is fascinating to me. It’s a snow globe of America: The good, the bad, the audacity, the optimism, the heartbreak.

We’ve not been to Las Vegas since 2018. That was for work, but it’s Vegas—you find fun.

We would have been back in 2020—again, the excuse being work. But you know, this whole pandemic was going on, and it seemed prudent not to do the entire “in-person” thing.

But, for 2022, we were back in the first week of December.

Strip to Fremont

Sometime before 2018, Laura and I decided it should be tradition to walk from wherever we’re staying on The Strip to downtown.

We did it the first time on a lark, and it was immensely satisfying to see a third side of Vegas—the one nestled between the Fremont Experience and The Strip.

This year we did it twice.

This is a lightweight walk in the grand scheme of things.

I’m surprised and not surprised by this. Ultimately, I (we) haven’t used Photoshop’s 3D stuff regularly at work in years. Okay, that is not entirely true, but certainly not recently. It’s just not our thing.

But it struck me as odd that Adobe, of all companies, would punt a seemingly prominent feature set entirely out of a major app of their Creative Suite. I wish I had time to get deeper into the how and why of this move.

Soundtracks Matter

I’ve not played much stuff from Bethesda, but Starfield is on my radar in a big way. A great soundtrack only helps their cause.

I’m still not 100%, but I’m also an idiot and haven’t taken the time I should have.

The bottom line is, still try to avoid getting this thing. It’s out there. It sucks. The degree of suck is variable. But why take a chance? When in doubt, put a mask on.
